I combined this with the Rola Hitch bag, and couldn’t be happier. This hitch is lightweight and easy to carry and store when not using. Easy to install. The full-sized Rola bag fits fine on top of this. Also easy to strap the bag, or whatever you’re carrying, to the tubular frame. Only downside is a bit of rust is showing after minimal usage, but should be fine. Very happy. Didn’t need the heavy or expensive hitch racks.

Installed this unit on my RV 2 inch receiver. It is easy to put together, takes about 10 minutes. It is a little loose on the receiver but some bungees help to keep it from flopping around. I needed a smaller size and this one does the trick. Has 3 holes so you can vary the distance that it sticks out from the back of your vehicle.

This product is great! It allows you to stick stuff you either dont have room for in your car, or dont want in your car, pretty much on your rear bumper.

Does what its designed to do.

This product is NOT a heavy duty item. I am somewhat skeptical of the mesh on the bottom. However, I have loaded this bad johnny up with a medium duty rototiller and no problems.

My only gripe is that it gets surface rust in a few spots. I would reccomend a better paint job, or paint it yourself.

Thule 846 Quest Rooftop Cargo Bag Reviews

Wow I thought THULE was THE company for this type of stuff. Boy was I mad after a trip from NJ to SC. The bag was mounted to my roofrack and was a little noisy (top be expected). But when I got to SC and opened the bag….the horror! The inside lining shredded and flaked off on everything! There were also 2 holes along the to seam! What a mess…and I couldn’t use the bag on the way home….had to ship my stuff home! I just wrote THULE….we’ll see if they come thru for the customer

Sept. 12, 2005 THULE sent me a replacement, an Escape 2. Great customer service….but does this mean the Escape is better? Is the Quest inferior? There was no coorespondence with the repalcement…I’ll try it out this summer.

We recently purchased the Thule Quest rooftop bag for use during our family vacation, which involved 1400 miles of driving. Our bag is 10 cu. ft. in size, which held three suitcases whose sizes where at the large end of airline carry-on luggage, along with several smaller bags (shoes, etc) and some odds and ends to fill the space. The bag has a sloping front end and did not add any detectable drag while driving. In fact I did not notice any real difference in driving whether the bag was attached or not. The cargo bag worked very well for us and the pros and cons are listed below:

Pros: It is lightweight, so it is very easy to attach to the roof. In fact, it was attached and loaded by one person. We have two cross supports on the top of our small SUV and the four straps provided allowed for the both the front and the back of the bag to be attached twice. While I checked the bag each time we stopped, the straps never loosened and the bag did not shift during the trip. I found it best to put the extra length of strap under the bag, if they are hanging loose they make a lot of noise. When we reached our destination and unloaded the cargo bag, I simply undid the straps and took off the bag. Those families vacationing with us that had the hard-top carriers had to leave them on for the entire week!! When not in use the bag simply folds up and is stored in the carry case provided.

Cons: As others have noted, these bags are best described as water resistant, not water proof. During the first part of our trip it was raining and when we finished the trip there was water inside the cargo bag. Knowing that this was possibility, I packed the suitcases in plastic lawn/leaf bags and with the small amount of water present the bags did not get wet. I would restrict the items put into the cargo bag to those that will not be damaged by water.

Overall the cargo bag worked well for us and I would recommend it, taking into account the limitations discussed above.
